והוה בתר כן ומית מלכא דבני עמון ומלך חנון בריה תחותוהי:
thkhwthwhy bryh khnwn wmlk emwn dbny mlka wmyth kn bthr whwh
After this, the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place.
2
ואמר דוד אעביד טיבו עם חנון בר נחש כמא דעבד אבוהי עמי טיבו ושלח דוד לנחמותיה בידא דעבדוהי לות אבוהי ואתו עבדי דוד לארעא בני עמון:
emwn bny larea dwd ebdy wathw abwhy lwth debdwhy byda lnkhmwthyh dwd wshlkh Tybw emy abwhy debd kma nkhsh br khnwn em Tybw aebyd dwd wamr
David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

ואמרו רברבי בני עמון לחנון רבוניהון המיקר דוד ית אבוך בעינך ארי שלח לך מנחמין הלא בדיל למחקר ית קרתא ולאללותה ולבדקה שלח דוד ית עבדוהי לותך:
lwthk ebdwhy yth dwd shlkh wlbdqh wlallwthh qrtha yth lmkhqr bdyl hla mnkhmyn lk shlkh ary beynk abwk yth dwd hmyqr rbwnyhwn lkhnwn emwn bny rbrby wamrw
But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”

ונסיב חנון ית עבדי דוד וגדע ית פלגות דקניהון ופסיק ית לבושיהון עד פלגיהון עד אתר בית בהתתהון ושלחינון:
wshlkhynwn bhththhwn byth athr ed plgyhwn ed lbwshyhwn yth wpsyq dqnyhwn plgwth yth wgde dwd ebdy yth khnwn wnsyb
So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

וחויאו לדוד ושלח לקדמותהון ארי הוו גבריא מתכלמין לחדא ואמר מלכא תבו ביריחו עד דיצמח דקניכון ותתובון:
wththwbwn dqnykwn dytsmkh ed byrykhw thbw mlka wamr lkhda mthklmyn gbrya hww ary lqdmwthhwn wshlkh ldwd wkhwyaw
When they told David this, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”

וחזו בני עמון ארי אתגריאו בדוד ושלחו בני עמון ואגרו ית ארם בית רחוב וית ארם צובא עסרין אלפין גבר רגלי וית מלך מעכה אלף גבר ואיש טוב תרי עסר אלפין גברא:
gbra alpyn esr thry Twb waysh gbr alp mekh mlk wyth rgly gbr alpyn esryn tswba arm wyth rkhwb byth arm yth wagrw emwn bny wshlkhw bdwd athgryaw ary emwn bny wkhzw
When the children of Ammon saw that they had become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.

ושמע דוד ושלח ית יואב וית כל חילא דגבריא:
dgbrya khyla kl wyth ywab yth wshlkh dwd wshme
When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men.

ונפקו בני עמון וסדרו קרבא במעלנא דתרעא וארם צובא ורחוב ואיש טוב ומעכה בלחודיהון בחקלא:
bkhqla blkhwdyhwn wmekh Twb waysh wrkhwb tswba warm dthrea bmelna qrba wsdrw emwn bny wnpqw
The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate. The Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field.

וחזא יואב ארי תקיפו עלוהי עבדי קרבא מאפוהי ומאחורוהי ובחר מכל בחורי ישראל וסדר לקדמות אנש ארם:
arm ansh lqdmwth wsdr yshral bkhwry mkl wbkhr wmakhwrwhy mapwhy qrba ebdy elwhy thqypw ary ywab wkhza
Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians.

וית שאר עמא יהב ביד אבשי אחוהי וסדר לקדמות בני עמון:
emwn bny lqdmwth wsdr akhwhy abshy byd yhb ema shar wyth
The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.
11
ואמר אם תתקף אנש ארם מני ותהי לי לפריק ואם בני עמון יתקפון מנך ואיהך למפרק לך:
lk lmprq wayhk mnk ythqpwn emwn bny wam lpryq ly wthhy mny arm ansh ththqp am wamr
He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.

תקף ונתקף על עמנא ועל קירוי אלהנא ויי יעבד דתקן קדמוהי:
qdmwhy dthqn yebd wyy alhna qyrwy wel emna el wnthqp thqp
Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people and for the cities of our God; and may Yahweh do what seems good to him.”

וקריב יואב ועמא די עמיה לאגחא קרבא באנש ארם ואפיכו מן קדמוהי:
qdmwhy mn wapykw arm bansh qrba lagkha emyh dy wema ywab wqryb
So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him.

ובני עמון חזו ארי אפכו אנש ארם וערקו מן קדם אבישי ואתו לקרתא ותב יואב מלות בני עמון ואתא לירושלם:
lyrwshlm watha emwn bny mlwth ywab wthb lqrtha wathw abyshy qdm mn werqw arm ansh apkw ary khzw emwn wbny
When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.

וחזו אנש ארם ארי אתברו קדם ישראל ואתכנישו כחדא:
kkhda wathknyshw yshral qdm athbrw ary arm ansh wkhzw
When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together.
16
ושלח הדדעזר ואפיק ית אנש ארם דמעבר פרת ואתו לחילם ושובך רב חילא דהדדעזר קדמיהון:
qdmyhwn dhddezr khyla rb wshwbk lkhylm wathw prth dmebr arm ansh yth wapyq hddezr wshlkh
Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.

ואיתחוא לדוד וכנש ית כל ישראל ועבר ית ירדנא ואתו לחלם וסדרו אנש ארם לקדמות דוד ואגיחו קרבא עמיה:
emyh qrba wagykhw dwd lqdmwth arm ansh wsdrw lkhlm wathw yrdna yth webr yshral kl yth wknsh ldwd waythkhwa
David was told that; and he gathered all Israel together, passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Syrians set themselves in array against David and fought with him.

ואפכו אנש ארם מן קדם ישראל וקטל דוד מארם שבע מאה רתיכין וארבעין אלפין פרשין וית שובך רב חיליה מחו ומית תמן:
thmn wmyth mkhw khylyh rb shwbk wyth prshyn alpyn warbeyn rthykyn mah shbe marm dwd wqTl yshral qdm mn arm ansh wapkw
The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers of the Syrians and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there.

וחזו כל מלכיא עבדי הדדעזר ארי אתברו קדם ישראל ואשלימו עם ישראל ופלחונון ודחילו אנש ארם למפרק עוד ית בני עמון:
emwn bny yth ewd lmprq arm ansh wdkhylw wplkhwnwn yshral em washlymw yshral qdm athbrw ary hddezr ebdy mlkya kl wkhzw
When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.
